Managing Stress is a Strategic Issue

Managing Stress is a Strategic Issue

Wednesday 9th January 2008

Helen Whitten

Executive Coach and Managing Director, Positiveworks Limited

An exciting opportunity to de-stress and hear how HR functions must manage stress in the workplace.

Come and de-stress after Christmas! Learn about how stress is a strategic issue whilst enjoying the delights of the Energy Clinic http://www.energyclinicuk.com (Energy Clinic becomes Eden Phenomena in January 2008) This corporate wellness centre and spa with series of unique and modern meeting rooms was designed to inspire creativity, communication, motivation, energy or relaxation. They offer an extensive range of corporate wellness packages to improve employee engagement, increase productivity, reduce sick absence and generally help people with stress issues. You can also enjoy a relaxing head, neck and shoulder massage before the talk.

Helen, a specialist in stress management, personal performance and emotional intelligence, working in this field for more than 15 years, will speak about how the number of people reporting personal experience of stress burnout has risen. Her premise is that stress is not a 'soft'
issue, it is a strategic one.

It is the responsibility of the HR function to leverage and support the human talent that exists within their organisation but frequently their views can get over-ridden by budgets and targets. No-one thinks twice about servicing a car before taking it on a long journey but supporting individuals to think clearly and retain energy through a long working day can still be regarded as a 'soft' option. It is up to HR professionals to advise senior managers how best to support their human resource.

This talk will cover:
o The addictive quality of the changing environment
o Stress makes us stupid - and sick
o The strategic saboteur - stress and burnout affects your high-achievers
o Identifying the needs of your 'human resource'
o Practical methods to get the most out of your talent pool

Positiveworks' coaches help people to make the most of themselves and the situations in which they operate. Their methods enhance self-awareness, self-confidence, motivation and creativity, enabling people to develop an enthusiastic and optimistic attitude, clear goals consistent with personal values, practical skills and knowledge, and the ability to maintain peak performance under pressure. Positiveworks offers expert coaches in a variety of fields.

Useful pause for thought and great, relaxing environment and facilities. I liked the personal energy boosting inpout by Tariq! I would have been interested to consider more suggestions about how to get stress onto the strategic agenda and practical actions that could be taken by HR

A different and relevant perspective on stress using the body's physiological cues, changes, & response that is informative for use by practitioners.

The presentation was a good reminder of what causes stress and the impacts it can have a work, which is especially useful at the beginning of the year when people are disposed to turning over a new leaf. However, I didn't feel I learned anything particularly new. I enjoyed the massage and the venue was lovely.

Clear, straightforward, engaging presentation which pinged lots of buttons in terms of familiarity with symptoms and issues. Would have liked more on ways to address stress. Very good to get the delegates doing interactive stuff.
