Leadership: The Director’s Cut
This innovative lunchtime session focuses on how one company tackled developing leadership skills through combining business psychology and theatrical technique.
Tony Hall is an internationally renowned expert on leadership development and, currently, he is also Head of HR for e2v (UK) & Global Head of Learning & Development. During this lunchtime session for the London HR Connection he is going to share the challenges his company faced in ensuring that the senior management team were not just technical leaders, but also leaders of people.
To achieve this they took a more creative approach to the usual leadership programmes and worked with The Leadership Theatre on a programme that was developed in association with business psychologists and drama professionals from the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art.
Paul Jamieson, a director from The Leadership Theatre, will join Tony to discuss this specific case study and the overall programme in more detail.
The case study tackles the ‘why’, the ‘how’ and, of course, the ‘business benefits’ of developing leadership skills through this technique. It will look at the ‘highs and lows’ of taking senior managers, including members of the Board, from an analytical, process focused, engineering environment to engage and develop through this workshop. How they coped with a development experience where delegates don’t just talk about leadership behaviours, they have to demonstrate them.
There isn’t a role-play in sight and rather than passively watching another PowerPoint slide marking the passage of time, you get to live a little of the experience itself!

The passion and enthusiasm of the client was infectious and the session was a very enjoyable way to spend a lunchtime, with some excellent input from the actors. What I took away was an understanding of the relevance of transferable skills from learning how to direct effectively - how important they are in leading and managing change in any organisation!

I thought as my first session it was enjoyable, interesting, and unusual. I didn't think it would be a suitable leadership tool for my organisation though so the direct impact was minimal but I enjoyed meeting others and the venue was central and great.

Very good session. Clear and simple application of real play using business psychology and theatrical techniques in developing leadership skills that made quick impact.

Very professional and entertaining. The drama scene could have been used differently to identify it with e.g. challenging situations at work and to more explicitly draw out the lessons.

An entertaining seminar that explained a very interesting approach to developing leadership. It looked like great fun, as well as being challenging and effective.
