Understanding Generation Y

Understanding Generation Y

Wednesday 5th November 2008

Sally Bibb

Director

An insight into Generation Y, the impact and implications for HR.

Generation Y’s values, preferences and attitudes to work are notably different from those of other generations. These differences are presenting challenges for organisations in the way they attract, retain and manage Gen Y.

Sally Bibb is co-founder and director of talentsmoothie. In this session she will draw upon generational theory and her global research as well as practical experience to give an insight into Generation Y, the impact and implications for HR.

Sally is an HR and OD professional. She has worked in international development roles in the telecoms and media sectors. Prior to co-founding the leadership consultancy, talentsmoothie, Sally was a director at The Economist Group.

Sally is also an award-winning writer, editor and author of several books and many articles on the subject of trust and organisational change.

She has an MSc in Organisational Change from the University of Surrey.

Fascinating info that really made me think. I would have liked more interaction/table discussion and a final session advising us as L & D people on how to use info.

An excellent presentation which was thought provoking and provided interesting insights into attitudes that we need to consider for our own reward, recognition, recruitment and retention

This was such an enjoyable event - a relevant topic I brought back to the office immediately (a few heated debates ensued). Sally is an engaging speaker and the research she presented was invaluable for a company such as ourselves, who invest in up to ten Gen Y grads per year.

Sally was a most inspiring speaker and gave me plenty of food for thought! I am going to discuss the session with my corporate HR colleagues as I believe this is an area which we need to explore and Sally may be able to assist.

Really interesting and thought provoking presentation. Her knowledge and understanding of the subject were evident.

Very professional presentation content and style. Great examples and the right amount of theory. Venue and catering very good.

It really highlighted the need to educate senior management (Xers and Boomers) so that they understand how Gen Y think, communicate, work and play! Only then can they hope to recruit, train and retain the best people in the market.

Sally is an excellent speaker. Good presentation - plenty of change and activity to keep interest. Good to hear someone talking first hand about research and not quoting other people's experience.

A really interesting presentation. Thank you.

I found Sally's talk interesting. This is my first time attending a LHRC lunch time event, definitely will try to make it to future events. There was a good mix of people attending and Sally was very engaging. The hour plus was well spent.

An excellent presentation on an interesting topic for HR and general managers. Unfortunately I arrived late so not much chance to network, will try to arrive earlier next time. Good slideshow, pity that the 'film' part of the different Generations is not included as this made most impact.
