Creative director of The Writer
How do you make HR sound human again. Come along and learn some techniques on how to communicate better using the written word.
People in HR and their departments have some of the hardest, most emotive, and most complicated stuff to communicate to their organisations. Sadly, in many of them, HR is drowning in as much meaningless corporatespeak as the rest of the business. Calling redundancies ‘synergy-related headcount reduction’ doesn’t fool anyone, and just makes you sound weasly.
So how do you make HR sound human again, without being fluffy? Neil will be talking about his experiences working with clients like the BBC, BT, and BA (and that’s just the Bs). And he’ll be sharing some of the techniques The Writer uses to help HR teams communicate better.

Neil is creative director of The Writer (www.thewriter.co.uk), the country’s largest language consultancy, where he trains people to be better business writers.
He’s also written a small pile of books: Brilliant Business Writing; The Name of the Beast, about coming up with names for brands; and Search Me: The surprising success of Google.
He pops up to talk about language and business from time to time on Radio 4, CNN, and yes, Saturday Kitchen, as well as in the Guardian. He speaks English with a slight Lancastrian twang, and French with a weird Quebec twang.

Very interesting and although I thought there are limits to his proposition, it was thought provoking and I will definitely try to review how I write in future.

My first event (as a guest). Very impressed with the level of attendance, quality of the networking conversations and of course an entertaining and informative presentation!

This was a truly fantastic event. Really inspirational speaker and I'm sure everyone in the room went away challenged to think about what they write and why they write it!

A very engaging speaker & hugely entertaining talk. It made a refreshing difference from the usual HR seminar! By contrast, I have just attended another lunchtime seminar which, funnily enough, was crammed full of acronyms and HR speak ('D&I' anyone - that's 'diversity and inclusivity',for the uninitiated). I'm still not sure if I can get away with starting a sentence with 'And', but I'll give it a try!

Neil was a very entertaining and informative speaker. The event was very useful in terms of challenging accepted ways of communicating corporate messages, particularly in relation to "HR speak"!
