‘HR Question Time’ - an interactive event with a multiple award winning panel of industry leaders

Wednesday 7th October 2009

David Fairhurst, Helen Giles & Siân Harrington, Editor of HR Magazine

Our award winning industry leaders will be taking questions from the floor on the hot issues affecting the HR sector today. A not to be missed opportunity to hear from – and quiz - four of the UK’s most respected HR professionals.

Panellists include:

• David Fairhurst, Chief People Officer at McDonald’s

• Helen Giles, Managing Director at Broadway

• Siân Harrington, Editor of HR Magazine

David Fairhurst was crowned Personnel Today's number one Power Player for the second year running in 2008. Fairhurst, senior vice-president and chief people officer at fast food chain McDonald’s, won the coveted trophy for being the most influential individual in the HR world after Personnel Today readers nominated people that have made the biggest impact throughout 2008. David is a Doctor of Business Administration (HC), an Honorary Fellow Lancaster University Business School, a Fellow of the Sunningdale Institute, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a Fellow of Royal Society Arts and has a Masters Degree in Strategic HRM. He has researched the area of ‘Outsourcing HR’ and has been published in this area. He is Vice Chairman of People First Sector Skills Council and Chairman of CPPD Manchester Metropolitan University (which supports development of HR in Northwest region). He has his own column in HR Magazine and has made numerous media appearances including BBC breakfast, Newsnight and Radio 4’s Today Programme.

Helen Giles, MBE and Chartered FCIPD, is HR Director for Broadway, one of London’s leading homelessness charities and Managing Director of Broadway’s Real People, a social enterprise offering HR consultancy and training support to other organisations. Broadway has been listed in the Sunday Times 100 Best Small Employers for three years and has won many awards for HR strategy and practice including a National Training Award, Personnel Today’s Best Place to Work in HR 2007 and Best Small HR Team 2008, the Best Employer and Best Charity Partnership categories in the Third Sector Excellence Awards 2008, HR Team of the Year in Inside Housing’s Housing Heroes Awards 2009 and Best Third Sector Strategy in HR Magazine’s HR Excellence Awards 2009. In 2008 Helen was listed at 11th place in Personnel Today’s Top 40 Power Players, and won the Personnel Today HR Director of the Year Award. In 2009 she ranked 12th in HR Magazine’s Most Influential HR Practitioners. She was appointed MBE in 2008.

Siân Harrington joined Human Resources (HR) magazine as editor at the end of 2006. Read by senior HR professionals, particularly HR directors, HR magazine believes HR strategy should always be closely linked to corporate strategy and performance and aims to provide readers with information they need to improve that performance. It is ABC audited and reaches board directors and CEOs/MDs as well as HR directors/senior HR managers.

Siân previously worked at The Grocer as deputy editor, then acting editor, for five years and has also undertaken freelance work for a range of publications including the Financial Times, Sunday Times, Independent, Marketing, Design Week, Promotions and Incentives, The Leisure Report, Retail Interiors, Nightclub, The Publican and The Big Issue.

Siân regularly chairs conferences and is a frequent commentator for radio, television and the national press. She also writes a monthly column on HR for The Grocer and was recently highly commended as Business Editor of the Year and for Monthly Business Magazine 2009 at the PPA Awards, the magazine industry’s Oscars!

Feedback

Should have had the chance to submit questions and timed answers, that way the shy people would have "spoken", a mix of written and spoken. Some answers were too long.

Overall, very good. I had a meeting called at short notice so unfortunately had to leave directly after the panel session

I thought the panel discussion was very good and very honest, something we try to advocate in the workplace so nice to see fellow professionals being honest about CIPD strengths and weaknesses etc.

Really enjoyed this lively event. I liked the honesty and humour of all three panellists. Their straight talking views struck many a chord.

Met some great people and some old faces. Enjoyed the panel. A good range of experience and perspectives was useful, though the hour does go fast. Looking forward to the next event.

A good panel of speakers and interesting mix of views and opinions.

Submitted by Matthew Pegler, Altyerre Ltd

It was my first time attending such an event and I was very impressed by the quality of the speakers and of the questions asked by those in the audience. It was extremely helpful to obtain an idea of what others saw as the major issues facing organisations at the moment. I was also impressed by the quality of those remaining for the networking lunch - I have gone to events where one is terribly underwhelmed! All in all, thank you so much for allowing me to attend as a guest. I would certainly be delighted to attend on a more regular basis.

This discussion was really interesting and touched on a lot of topics which are often covered in HR press. It would have been useful to narrow the subject matter a little more.
